Guide Me Home: Homecoming

Description

It wasn't long before the door opened and everyone turned to see Zuko. He was beaming. There was no other word for it. If he had looked happy and at peace during his coronation, it paled to what was on his face now.

Zuko looked around at them all. "Thank you for coming. I had asked you here for help with something, but it turns out what I was looking for came to me instead." He cleared his throat and stepped aside. "I have someone I'd like you all to meet."

And there she was, using her crutches to step into the room from the corridor. She was safe. As much as Hakoda had believed it, the relief at seeing it was enormous.

Hakoda stood to his feet as Zuko said, "This is..."

Ursa stared at Hakoda. Her face showed the same joy that he felt, and her name dropped out of his mouth with the full weight of his emotions. "Ursa."

"…my…" Zuko stopped talking as Ursa stepped past him. She dropped her crutches and he caught her in his arms, and they shared an elated, relieved kiss. The room was silent until Zuko's final word came out sounding dazed and confused. "…mother."

Hakoda knew they needed to explain, could see out of the corners of his eyes that his children were staring at him in shock, but his gaze was fixed on Ursa's as they beamed at each other.

Critique Not Wanted

Artist's Comments:
(written the morning after this was posted)
Soooooooooo... I don't really want critique on the art itself. I know where I could have done better that way. But this is my first drawn comic that has a 'flow' to it, and I would love to get some feed back on how I could have made this flow better from 'slide-to-slide'.

Art wise, I felt it was better to add a couple of age-lines to Ursa. It's been 6 years since we've 'seen' her in the TV show, and I would suspect that the stress of not knowing if her kids were safe, the war, and then the whole badda-bing adventure with Hakoda that happens in Guide Me Home would age her a good couple of years. I suspect that she's in her late 30's, early 40's. Eh, my mom started getting white hair in her 30's (I promise it wasn't because of me!). My favorite part to draw would be Zuko in that close up in the second 'slide', and then (of course) the last one- from the faces of the kids to the kiss between Ursa and Hakoda, I just love that one. Although I wonder, can any of you guys figure out which 'slide' I put of on doing till last?

My last little tidbit- I totally forgot about the necklace. I was mostly done, my goal to post this by midnight (which I made!) and it was already 11 pm, when somehow I remembered that Hakoda had given her a necklace. I couldn't remember when that happened, or what it was supposed to look like, so I made one up myself. Then I went back and checked to see what it was supposed to look like- "He pulled out a necklace. It was strung with a blue ribbon, and had a round, silver pendant hanging on it. The metal had been etched with two symbols. The emblem of the Water Tribe and the emblem of the Fire Nation were overlapping slightly, joined together in unity just as she and Hakoda were."~excerpt from Guide Me Home, Chapter 27: Reunion. So I left it as it was because I felt it fit Qwi-xux's description perfectly.

Over all, I enjoyed it a lot, and I might explore making more comics in the future. But for now, I'll stick to what I currently do. I mean, this took me 3 days to finish! I put in at least 4-5 hours in each day on this. So yeah. Back to my regular stuff.
